The research emphasis of the Department is to promote a sustainable, caring, and intelligent life for human being. The emphasis spreads into research fields including low-power/low-voltage system-on-chip (SoC) and embedded system design, advanced networking and wireless communication, intelligent home robots, efficient media processing, smart grid and DC supply, etc. To effectively and efficiently perform these research works, seven research groups with different research foci, as listed below, have been formed, where three of them are from the Department of Communications Engineering at National Chung Cheng University.
- Communication and Networking (Communications Engineering), including high speed network, communication protocols, network programming and management, network design and analysis, wireless sensor network, broadband network, optical communications systems, network security, real-time embedded systems, mobile communications, cloud computing networks, etc.
- Communication Systems (Communications Engineering), including coding theory, wireless communications, communications theory, 4th generation wireless communications systems, wireless resource management, personal and mobile communications systems, statistical signal processing, smart array signal processing, collaborative communications, network coding, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications, etc.
- Computer Engineering, including mobile robot, humanoid robot, autonomous vehicle, smart home system, computer vision, artificial intelligence, software engineering, neural network, machine learning, embedded system, software simulation, intelligent control, human-computer interaction, rapid prototyping, novel designs of locomotion, medical phantom design, physiological signal sensing, etc.
- Electromagnetic Integrated Circuits and Systems (Communications Engineering), including RF, microwave and millimeter-wave circuit design, antenna array and beamforming, bio-medical electromagnetic detection, wireless positioning systems, radar-based application development, microwave transistor modeling, microwave communication systems, microwave courseware development, etc.
- Electric Power, Renewable Energy, and Power Electronics, including design of smart grids, renewable energy, power system analysis, power quality, energy economics and management, fault detection technologies for electrical power equipment, control systems, mechatronics integration, electric motor drives, power electronics, microgrid design and implementation, etc.
- Signal and Intelligent Computing, including Multimedia wireless/wired communication system, digital audio/video processing, virtual reality (3D VR) and stereo animation/audio design, intelligent human interface system, photoelectric signal processing and optical computer, pattern recognition application (satellite, medical, military remote sensing and other images), biomedical signal processing and recognition, remote signal sensing and transmission, communication and signal processing IC chip design, etc.
- System on Chips, including low-power/low-voltage SoC design, VLSI circuit and system design, digital image processing IC design, biomedical signal processing IC design, multimedia network IC design, power management IC design, display controller IC design, computer architecture, analog front-end, sensor interface, tranducer, energy harvesting, DC-DC converter, data converter, computer-aided design, electronic design automation, etc.
- Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence,
The Department has not only competed for large project grants from National Science Council (NSC), but also acquired dozens of projects yearly from industrial cooperation, National Science and Technology Program (NSTP), and Ministry of Economic Affairs' (MOEA) Technology Development Program. Continual excellence has been faithfully accredited with major awards from NSC, NSTP, and MOEA.
